Scientist – Kekeha, HI

Role Purpose – 

This position will oversee the activities occurring in Hawaii for integrating traits into elite corn inbreds.

Accountabilities – 

Manage four conversion teams located on Oahu and Kauai who have direct accountability for conversion of Syngenta and 3rd party elite inbred lines with core traits. • Fully comply with and own Trait Stewardship guidelines. o Operate within and enforce Syngenta stewardship policies and processes. o Fully understand and adhere to SQC gateways. o Ensure required Site Work Instructions and protocols pertaining to trait conversion function are developed and followed • Encourage safety awareness and fully support Syngenta and station safety objectives. • Train and develop direct reports as well as assist in the training of other station personnel as appropriate • Understand and execute Syngenta trait conversion strategy • Core member of Hawaii site management team, helping set and execute overall site objectives and processes • Serve as functional representative on selected project teams • Closely work with other TID scientist on site to assure overall functional objectives are met, including budget preparation and management, seasonal labor requirement estimation and coordination, and land allocation and use. • Directing and executing research critical to Traits strategies and goals. • Formulating broad project goals and ensuring stated objectives are accomplished. Overall responsibility for success of a project team. • Understanding and promoting business interests of the company and providing input in strategy development. • May perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, experience & capabilities –

Critical knowledge:

PH.D. and extensive work experience in plant breeding, genetics or related field in a research and development environment.

Critical experience:

Training or experience in project and team management skills. • Demonstrated success in technical proficiency in the area of genetics and plant breeding, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought. • Expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts, and demonstrated ability to apply new technologies or adapt processes to crop improvement. • Experience in commercial development of elite crop products. • Understanding of the process for conversion of elite material with single or multiple locus traits. • Management of people and projects.

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities:

Demonstrated ability to work on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors. • Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selection methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. • Demonstrated ability to determine methods and procedures on new assignments and provide guidance to other personnel.
