Associate Scientist – Kunia, HI

Role Purpose – 

Leading Hawaii conversion team in introgression of key traits into Syngenta germplasm.

Accountabilities – 

Coordinate with Station staff and external service providers such as marker and ELISA labs to ensure all nursery activities such as planting, sampling, pollinations, and harvest are accomplished with required timeliness. o Maximum cycle times of 120 days from planting to the next planting o Adequate staff for planting preparation, sampling, pollination and harvest • Closely coordinate and communicate project status with Trait Conversion Scientist and other conversion team leads located on Oahu or Kauai. o Maintain and report an accurate and timely project status of assigned conversion projects. o Ensure adequate parental seed is on hand for each planting cycle. o As required, be able to track and communicate to stakeholders of conversion projects conversion seed quantity and its location • Accurately communicate with other station functions concerning the coordination and sharing of station resources. • Full compliance with and ownership of Trait Stewardship guidelines. o Operate within and enforce Syngenta stewardship policies and processes. o Fully understand and adhere to SQC gateways. o Develop or oversee the development of Site Work Instructions and protocols pertaining to trait conversion function. • Encourage safety awareness and fully support station safety objectives. • Train and develop direct reports as well as assist in the training of other station personnel as appropriate. • Working with Station Management, maintain a fair and even allocation of additional assignments for direct reports on station teams.

Knowledge, experience & capabilities –

Critical knowledge:

M.S. degree in a scientific discipline or a BS with the equivalent of at least three years of experience in a related field. • Ability to use personal computer and standard office software. • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of corn breeding. • Ability to learn and develop proficiency with complex plant breeding software applications

Critical experience:

Experience in corn trait conversion activities, or in trait conversion programs of other crops. • Experience in working with regulated traits in field environments • Experience in continuous nursery.

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities:

Ability to work in a team and to communicate with individuals in the company. • Ability and motivation to learn new technologies and concepts. • Demonstrated leadership ability. • Ability to provide day to day direction to employees as required. • May be required to obtain a pesticide operators license and commercial driver's license.
