Winter Nursery Coordinator Nevada, IA – Job Id # 1002

 

Role Purpose

• The purpose of the Soybean Winter Nursery Coordinator is to support the NAFTA soybean product development program through the coordination of all winter and continuous nurseries in tropical, contraseason, or greenhouse locations. The individual is expected to: identify and incorporate protocols to assure the consistent production of high quality seed, communicate timelines to meet winter nursery planting deadlines, and direct projects to appropriate winter/continuous nursery locations to maximize efficient use of resources.

 

Accountabilities

• Continually evaluate capabilities and best usage practices for each winter/continuous facility • Develop and manage continuous breeding timelines and protocols. • Coordinate department wide winter/continuous nursery activities, selection of the appropriate winter/continuous nursery locations and interaction with winter/continuous nursery providers. • Develop working relationships with winter/continuous nursery site managers and providers by searching for opportunities that best fit the needs of breeders/scientists for winter nursery support, representing mainland scientist’s needs when working with winter/continuous nursery providers, and ensuring winter/continuous nursery providers are aware of mainland scientist’s needs and issues. • Provide coordination support for NAFTA soybean department that meets the winter/continuous nursery needs of the mainland scientists. • Leading Winter/Continuous Nursery annual planning activities. • Performing other duties as needed upon request by immediate supervisor.

 

 

Knowledge, experience & capabilities –

Critical knowledge • BS in Biological Research Science required. • Strong field orientation. • Understanding seed shipping requirements in shipping seed across international borders. • Understanding the process to develop new soybean varieties. • Knowledge of agronomic practices related to seed production in tropical and Southern Hemisphere environments. • Budget management competence Critical experience • Five years experience in research or seed production. • Five years experience with winter nursery operations or winter production isolations. Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities • Strong organizational skills • Possess leadership and consensus building skills. • Ability to manage, develop and refine protocols and timelines • Fluency in Spanish a plus. Critical success factors & key challenges • The key challenges in this role are to develop innovative plans for winter and continuous breeding capabilities and resources that accelerate the development of improved soybean varieties, and to manage needs and requests from multiple users with multiple resources in different locations and countries.

• A minimum of 2 years in current position is required (requirement for internal applicants only) • All applicants must be eligible to work in the US. PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Willing to travel to winter nursery sites to provide support to the winter nursery site managers. WORKING CONDITIONS WHILE PERFORMING ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • About 80% office and 20% outside field work.
