Soybean Pathology Associate Scientist – Bay, AR – 985 

Role Purpose – 

Supports the development and delivery to market of disease resistant soybean varieties.

Accountabilities – 

Independently conducts pathology screens for evaluation of breeding; may manage the general breeder-support screening program. • Assist with the diagnosis of plant diseases and identification of plant pathogens. • Under supervision of the Plant Pathologist, manage the planting, growing, irrigation of plants in the greenhouse, growth room, and laboratory. • Assist in evaluation of field trials and collection of samples as necessary. • Responsible for day to day operation of pathology greenhouses and growth chambers, culture maintenance, house keeping, etc. • Assist with day to day operation of pathology laboratory, including preparation of growth media, stock solutions, ordering of supplies, and regular maintenance of equipments. • Schedule, manage, and work with 3rd-party labor. • Work in accordance with safety regulations and guidelines. • Collects data from disease screens and experiments and inputs into SPRIT. • Manages seed and other inventories using SPRIT. • Prepares technical reports and summaries. • Helps maintain computer records of experiments and screens. • Work cooperatively with breeding programs and other on-site programs and personnel. • Schedules disease screens and coordinates activities between the pathology and other programs.

Knowledge, experience & capabilities –

Critical knowledge:

Experience with Oomycetes fungi such as Phytopthora spp. and other important soybean diseases will be added benefit.

Critical experience:

BS with 2-5 years related experience. • MS preferred. • Knowledge of plant pathology, plant breeding, statistics, and agriculture. • Demonstrated knowledge of the physiology of soybean plants. • Extensive work under laboratory, greenhouse, and field conditions. • Extensive knowledge with fungal plant pathogens is essential.

Extensive knowledge and/or willingness to learn about disease screening techniques and methods are critical to the success of this position. A minimum of 2-3 years relevant work experience will be advantageous
