Director of Communications and Creative Services

Organizational Overview Named to Fast Company magazine’s list of “Top Social Capitalists” for the last four years in a row, Rare is committed to bringing a spirit of entrepreneurship and creativity to solving one of this century’s great challenges – inspiring people to support conservation. Rare specializes in social marketing – a method for changing attitudes and behaviors that has been successfully applied by other organizations to such issues as seatbelt use, smoking, pollution, teen drug abuse, and reproductive health. (Think “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk” or “Give a hoot, don’t pollute”). Rare is the leader in social marketing for conservation — with a successful track record in more than 40 countries to date. We train leaders from both large and small environmental organizations around the world to run grassroots campaigns that inspire their communities to reduce harmful behaviors like destructive fishing, unsustainable agriculture, illegal hunting, deforestation, habitat degradation, and or lack of policy or protection for natural resources. Rare works primarily in the developing tropics. Home to more than half of the world’s population, some of its most rapidly growing economies, and the richest remaining stores of biological diversity, the tropics will in large part determine the fate of our global natural resources (~25% of the CO2 emissions causing the climate crisis come from deforestation in the developing tropics!). Rare’s local partners have used social marketing to reach millions of people living in these ecologically threatened corners of the globe. Alumni of our program represent one of the largest and most effective networks of local leaders on Earth. Rare’s global network also includes a range of top international conservation groups, including The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, Wildlife Conservation Society, Audubon, the United Nations Environment Programme, the national governments of China, Mexico, Peru, and Indonesia, and many others. These partners provide funding, technical support, and a commitment to sustaining impact at Rare’s campaign sites in the long term. The Rare Board recently adopted a new strategic plan that entails tripling in size and impact by 2012. We are hiring a range of new positions, including the Director of Communications and Creative Services. Position Overview Rare seeks an experienced communications and creative services professional, who is looking for his or her “next big challenge” and who will thrive in a fast-paced, global organization. The Director is responsible for growing the Rare brand and bringing our stories to life for a wide range of audiences and across multiple media, including print, Web, video, and interactive tools. Areas of Responsibility • Oversees the Rare brand and its execution across a wide range of media • Writes, edits, and designs print collateral for donors, partners, and press (with support of Manager) • Ensures dynamic content for the Web site, including editorial calendar, content development, and creation of new features • Supervise a Communications Manager, who supports writing, design, and production of all collateral • Creates presentations and talking points for senior leadership and program staff • Manages production of displays and messaging for trade events • Ensures ongoing training in brand communications and messaging for all staff globally
