Site Manager-Kekaha or Kunia, HI - 1001

 

Role Purpose

• The purpose of the Station Manager role is oversee the site management and agronomy of the corn, soybean, parent seed and trait projects and ensure they are completed in a timely, accurate, safe, secure and cost effective manner. This is measured by safety and stewardship performance, reliability and quality of seed production, timely delivery, quality of site operations and agronomic support, budget efficiency and ability to add to an innovative and motivated team environment at the station.

 

Accountabilities –

1. Personnel Management of site support staff • Recruit, hire, train and manage 6 to 12 direct reports • Manage relations with third-party labor provider responsible for sourcing flexible workforce of 70 to 150 seasonal staff • Develop and foster a team environment at the station • Ensure company and department goals and policy including safety, stewardship and security are aligned with Syngenta culture • Ensure station staff have performance objectives with regular performance reviews • Ensure regular training in safety, stewardship and professional development 2. Oversee station activities to assure that all departments' standards and timelines are met for planting, agronomic management and harvesting of: • Corn nursery and top cross rows • Trait rows and projects • Soybean crosses and increases • Supply Management on increases and samples production at the winter site 3. Align resource and work plans in cooperation with MGD, PEA, Trait and Supply Management. • Work with these managers to get regular feedback on seed quality / quantity and efficiency in support of R&PD and supply chain goals and business objectives 4. Plan, forecast and manage multi-million dollars in Operating Budgets 5. Research Site Management Responsibilities • Building, grounds and land maintenance and security. • Regulatory compliance, stewardship, and safety. • Land and equipment lease to accomplish objectives • Acquire and maintain capital equipment to met the station's objectives • Plan and oversee building and field improvements • Assure timely and effective communication with scientists and their staff

 

Knowledge, experience & capabilities –

 

Critical knowledge:

• A thorough knowledge of corn and soybean production and research processes and requirements. • Broad knowledge of breeding, trait introgression and marker technology associated with corn and soybeans • Understanding of tropical growing environments and impact on seed quantity / quality. • General understanding of field, road and lab equipment utilization. • A good understanding of cultural practices (e.g., weed control, soil fertility practices). • Outstanding people management skills.

 

Critical Skills:

Critical experience • Bachelors degree required, Masters degree preferred and five years experience in tropical site preferred • Demonstrated winter research site management • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and motivate staff and teams Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities • Excellent organizational and planning skills. • Excellent interpersonal skills • Ability to effectively function as a team member in cross functional activities • Ability to understand and communicate complex instructions. • Excellent problem solving skills. • Ability to establish priorities and oversee multiple research activities simultaneously at peak work periods.
